BEACON EDUCATION NETWORK
ABOUT US
The Beacon Education Network (BEN) mission is to provide college readiness for historically under-served students in non-urban communities.
Beacon’s first school, Ceiba College Prep, opened in August 2008. We are in the process of preparing two additional charters for submission, as we are inspired by the belief that a network of small, high-quality charter schools can expand opportunities for families and improve achievement for all students.
Over the past 40 years, attainment levels have been declining in America and improving in other countries. Between the years of 1995-2006, the U.S. went from 1st to 14th in college and university graduation rates. Less than 15% of the worlds college graduates are currently from America, compared to to 30% in 1970. The U.S. has experienced a similar trend in high school attainment, falling to 18th out of 24 industrialized nations in high school graduation.
Most students in America do not receive the education that they deserve. This is particularly true for students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds, and has resulted in Latino students falling behind White and African American students. The same is true for economically disadvantaged students who struggle to keep up with their more affluent peers.
At Beacon, we provide students in great need with small learning communities reflecting high expectations for student engagement, parent participation and school accountability. We believe that all students can be successful at high levels and recognize the growing need to prepare more students for college.
Fortunately, there has been mounting interest, innovation and funding in urban school reform. We have chosen to focus on students living in non-urban communities that lack access to the benefits of this movement.
We envision a world where all students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to succeed in college and beyond. A world where students feel engaged and empowered to affect change in their communities. A world where schools partner and adapt to meet the evolving needs of students and their families.
The quality of a school is dependent on the quality of its team, and we are always on the lookout for inspiring and dedicated all stars. If you’re interested in a career with Beacon, please click one of the links below:
